The World Peace Flame in Byron Bay, Australia

The World Peace Flame is now burning eternally in Byron Bay, Australia.

The lighting of the Flame was the focal point of the annual Byron Bay Peace Festival, which attracts thousands of people.

The World Peace Flame was welcomed on 17 September 2005 with a candle-lit procession at sunset, including a special Aboriginal fire ceremony on the beach. It was then carried to The Byron Peace Park where it was received by a large audience gathered for a spectacular outdoors Peace Flame Ceremony.

A variety of well-known speakers and entertainers ensured an enjoyable and inspirational evening for all, and afterwards the World Peace Flame was the focus for a night prayer vigil on the beach front.

The next day, the World Peace Flame was installed in a monument at the Byron Bay Community Centre. The Flame then joined the colourful Byron Peace Parade with singers, drummers, and hundreds of rainbow peace flags.

Byron Bay has a special connection with the light because it is the first town on the continent to receive the sun's light each morning. It is also home to the first Australian World Peace Flame Peace Pole, installed in 2001.
