On October 7th 2010, the inauguration of the World Peace Flame Monument took place in Nijmegen. The monument is situated on a quiet square in front of the Gedachteniskerk, near the 'Titus Brandsma Memorial' close to the busy city centre.
The World Peace Flame Monument symbolizes a flame carried by the hands of many people together. Behind the monument is a wall with inspiring proverbs on peace. Each year new proverbs are added to the list.
The flame was lit by co-founders of the World Peace Flame, Dr Mansukh Patel and Savitri MacCuish, along with a representative of the municipality of Nijmegen and Kees Waaijman of Het Titus Brandsma memorial. The beautiful ceremony also included contributions from the choir ‘Colourful Nijmegen’ and various international guests.
The monument is frequently used by people looking for peacefulness and inspiration at the flame, and those who simply want to step away from the crowded city for a while.
Next to the World Peace Flame, another monument commemorates Titus Brandsma, a mystic and advocate of education, emancipation and freedom of the press at the time of the second world war.
